Portfolio Types
Atlas Labs Ledger supports a growing set of portfolio types, each tuned to a specific kind of finances you want to track. Pick the type that matches what you're recording — the chart of accounts, transaction tiles, default jurisdiction tax pack, and aggregator buckets adapt automatically.
A single Atlas Labs account can hold many portfolios. You can mix types freely (a freelance portfolio for your consulting + an investor portfolio for your ISA + a property portfolio for your rental flat).
Phase 1 — Investor + Cash + Tax (live)#
TRADFI_INVESTOR#
For listed equities, bonds, ETFs, funds, and REITs held through a brokerage. Records buy / sell at FIFO cost basis, recognises dividends
- interest + bond coupons, handles corporate actions (splits, mergers, spinoffs, rights issues) through a dedicated Corporate Actions queue.
Sidebar entries:
- Securities — open positions, per-security drill-down, Buy / Sell / Mature buttons, Record income / expense dropdown for dividends / interest / bond coupons / fund distributions / margin interest.
- Corporate Actions — queue for splits / dividends / mergers / spinoffs / rights issues. Click Apply on a row to translate the action into the right close-old-lot / open-new-lot / income-recognition operations.
TRADFI_CASH#
For bank accounts (checking, savings, credit cards) tracked through auto-feed providers. Records every transaction the bank reports, runs a recurring-detection service that flags Netflix / Spotify / utility-bill patterns, and lands new transactions in the existing reconciliation queue.
Sidebar entries:
- Connections — connect a bank via Plaid (sandbox + real keys supported) or one of the EU providers (TrueLayer / Tink / GoCardless follow when their keys are configured).
- Recurring — every detected recurring pattern from the last 90 days with Subscription / Bill / Clear buttons.
TRADFI_FREELANCE#
For self-employed users — consultants, freelancers, contractors. Issue invoices to clients (DRAFT → SENT → PAID with HMAC-signed pay token), record expenses against eight categories with cost-of-service vs operating-expense routing, schedule estimated tax payments per jurisdiction.
Sidebar entries:
- Invoices — client registry + invoice CRUD + per-row Send / Mark paid / Void buttons.
- Expenses — category dropdown + cash-basis recording + optional attachment URL.
Phase 2 — Work (live)#
TRADFI_WORK#
For employees with a payslip + equity comp. Records gross / withholding / net pay per period, registers RSU / ESPP / ISO / NSO grants with vesting schedules, and auto-vests scheduled events through a daily cron that resolves FMV via Yahoo Finance.
Sidebar entries:
- Payslips — per-employer registry + payslip recording (gross + bonus + income tax withheld + payroll tax withheld → net pay).
- Equity Grants — register an RSU / ESPP / ISO / NSO grant with a cliff-then-monthly default schedule. Click Vest now on any scheduled event to enter FMV and post the journal entry.
Phase 3 — Business + Property + Marketplace#
TRADFI_BUSINESS — live#
For sole traders and Ltd companies that need VAT / GST tracking. Each business entity has its own VAT scheme (standard / flat-rate / cash-basis / exempt) and country. The period-close flow transfers accumulated VAT_OUTPUT minus VAT_INPUT into VAT_PAYABLE for downstream payment to the tax authority.
Sidebar entry:
- Business — register a business entity, open a VAT period for the relevant jurisdiction, then close the period when reporting time comes. Closing posts the closure journal entry and stamps the computed totals on the period row. UK VAT100, IE VAT3, and DE Umsatzsteuer-Voranmeldung are wired through the per-jurisdiction VAT engine; other EU + APAC jurisdictions follow as users surface them.
TRADFI_PROPERTY — live#
For landlords and property investors. Tracks one or more properties with their mortgages and tenants. Mortgage payments split automatically into principal + interest portions; an amortisation engine returns the full schedule from origination to payoff.
Sidebar entry:
- Properties — register a property (with optional mortgage financing), then record per-property transactions. Each transaction posts the right journal entry: rent received credits Rent Income; mortgage payments split into principal + interest via the amortisation engine; CAPEX capitalises into the property cost; depreciation is supported manually today (cron auto-post is a follow-up).
TRADFI_FREELANCE → Specialist Marketplace v1 (W3.3)#
A separate marketplace surface where freelance specialists (CPAs, tax advisors, financial planners) offer paid engagements to Atlas Labs users. Stripe Connect handles payments + 17.5% platform fee. Vetted by admin before listing; mandatory disclaimer "Specialist is independent; Atlas Labs does not provide regulated advice" on every advice-adjacent surface.
Sub-phases scoped (round 3); not yet started.
Phase 4 — Retirement + Debt + Founder + Advisor#
TRADFI_RETIREMENT — live#
For retirement accounts: US 401k / 403b / IRA Traditional / IRA Roth, UK SIPP / Personal Pension, CA RRSP / TFSA, AU Super, DE Riester. Each account has a custodian (Vanguard, Fidelity, Hargreaves Lansdown). Contributions track employee + employer match separately; employer match recognises as Equity Comp Income per IAS 19. Distributions classify per-jurisdiction (Roth = no income, Traditional = ordinary income on the gross amount).
Sidebar entry:
- Retirement — register a retirement account at any of 11 jurisdiction-typed account types, then record contributions (employee + optional employer match). Each contribution posts a balanced journal entry and updates the account balance. RMD scheduling and per-jurisdiction contribution-limit checks are follow-ups.
TRADFI_DEBT — live#
For unsecured debt: student loans, personal loans, BNPL, credit lines. (Mortgages live on Property/Mortgage in TRADFI_PROPERTY because they're property-secured.) Loan payments split principal + interest using the same amortisation engine that powers mortgage payments.
Sidebar entry:
- Loans — register a loan with principal + rate + term, then record each payment. The amortisation engine auto-splits the payment into principal + interest portions, posts the journal entry, and decrements the loan's outstanding balance.
HYBRID_FOUNDER — live#
For founders who hold their company as a separate Atlas Labs portfolio, or couples who maintain joint + individual portfolios, or parents-and-children. The PortfolioRelationship row links portfolios with one of three relationship kinds: OWNS (founder owns company), CO_OWNS (joint ownership with explicit ownership percentage), GUARANTEES (one portfolio guarantees another's debt).
Sidebar entry:
- Relationships — register a relationship from the active portfolio to another portfolio you own. Inter-portfolio transfer flow (creates two atomic journal entries linked by counterpartyJournalEntryId) and the aggregator elimination logic that nets matched pairs in consolidated reports follow in W4.3.3 / W4.3.4.
Advisor Portal v1 (W4.4)#
Lets a CPA, financial planner, or accountant be granted READ_ONLY or WRITE access to a client's portfolios. Insert-only on revoke (audit trail preserved). Per-seat billing under an Advisor plan.
Sub-phases scoped (round 7); not yet started.
Phase 5 — Family Office (sub-phase scoped)#
FAMILY_OFFICE#
A composition layer that walks a family-office membership graph, applies per-member ownership percentages, runs the W4.3 inter-portfolio elimination, and produces consolidated net-worth + P&L + tax-pack matrices per jurisdiction × member.
Sub-phases scoped (round 7); not yet started.
Picking a portfolio type#
Most users start with one of:
- TRADFI_INVESTOR — you actively manage a brokerage account.
- TRADFI_CASH — you want to track day-to-day banking in Atlas.
- TRADFI_FREELANCE — you invoice clients and pay business expenses.
- TRADFI_WORK — you have a salaried job and equity comp.
You can change a portfolio's type later, but the chart of accounts seeds at creation time — switching types after-the-fact may leave unused accounts visible. The cleanest path for a major change is a new portfolio with the right type.
For tax-pack rendering across all of these, see the Tax Pack page in your sidebar (gated on the per-jurisdiction `tax-pack-` flag).
